PALM FATTY ACID DISTILLATE

Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD) is a processing residue derived from the physical refining of crude palm oil. During the refining process, free fatty acids and other impurities are removed to enhance the oil’s taste, odor, color, and shelf life. The distillation of these components results in PFAD, which is a light brown semi-solid at room temperature, melting into a brown liquid upon heating. PFAD typically contains up to 80% free fatty acids, predominantly palmitic and oleic acids, with the remaining 20% comprising triglycerides, partial glycerides, and minor components like vitamin E, sterols, and squalene.

APPLICATION
  • Biofuel Production: PFAD serves as a renewable raw material in biofuel production.

  • Oleochemical Industry: It is used in the manufacture of soaps, candles, and other oleochemical products.

  • Animal Feed: PFAD is incorporated into animal feed formulations, providing energy and essential fatty acids.

BENEFITS
Health Benefits
  • Cardiovascular Health: Contains oleic acid, which can lower LDL cholesterol, and palmitic acid, which may not negatively impact cholesterol as previously thought.
  • Antioxidant Properties: Rich in vitamin E (tocotrienols and tocopherols), which combat oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • Skin Health: Tocotrienols in PFAD have anti-aging properties and protect the skin from UV damage.
Nutritional Value
  • Fatty Acid Profile: Composed of saturated and monounsaturated fats, with some polyunsaturated fats.
  • Micronutrients: Contains vitamin E and beta-carotene, essential for immune function and vision health.
Environmental and Economic Benefits
  • Waste Utilization: Helps reduce waste from the palm oil refining process.
  • Cost-Effective: An affordable raw material for various industries.
